Men’s Life Transitions Toolkit - Worksheets, Prompts & Guides

By Donna Burfield - Joy & Purpose Coaching

This isn’t about reinventing your whole life overnight. It’s about reconnecting with the part of you that still wants things, even if quietly, even if you’ve forgotten how to listen to him.

There’s no rush. No pressure. Just space to explore the possibilities that still exist for you.

1 - The Life Beneath the Life

Most men spend decades doing what was required, providing, protecting, showing up, pushing through. But beneath all that, there were always things you cared about, even if you didn’t have space for them.

What has always mattered to me, even when I didn’t have time for it?

Think about the small truths that have followed you through life:

  • moments when you felt most alive

  • things you quietly cared about

  • the parts of yourself that never went away

Write what comes to mind:

Which parts of myself did I put on hold for the sake of others, and are they asking to return now?

2 - The Man I Haven’t Met Yet

You’ve lived multiple versions of yourself: worker, father, partner, friend, protector. There may be versions of you that haven’t had their chance yet.

Who is the man I haven’t become yet, but feel a pull toward?

This doesn’t have to be dramatic. It could be:

  • a calmer man

  • a man who tries new things

  • a man who travels

  • a man who cooks

  • a man who finally breathes

  • a man who speaks his mind

  • a man who enjoys his own company

  • a man who is no longer defined by one job

Describe that man:

What would he tell me to start doing or to stop doing?

3 - Listening to the Quiet Wants

Not the loud expectations. Not the “shoulds.” The quieter wants, the ones you might never have said out loud.

  • What do I quietly want more of in my life? (peace, adventure, challenge, simplicity, connection, freedom, fun, strength, belonging)

  • What do I quietly want less of?

  • What am I curious about, even if I don’t feel confident yet?

4 - The Future I Can Actually Imagine

Big visions can feel overwhelming. But a future you can imagine, even vaguely, is a future that’s possible.

If life became 10% better over the next year, what would that look like?

Think practical, emotional, relational, physical, anything.

What could my days look like if they were shaped around who I am now, not who I used to be?

5 - A Heartfelt Step

Clarity often comes after movement, not before it. So instead of a plan, choose something with heart, something that feels like it matters, even a little.

  • What is one meaningful step I could take in the next week or month? (Not a big leap, just something that feels honest.)

  • What would help me take that step? (a person, a habit, a reminder, a boundary, time alone)

Closing Note

You don’t need to know the whole path. You just need a direction that feels true, and the courage to begin, even quietly. The next chapter isn’t something you find. It’s something you build, one thought, one choice, one step at a time.

Look back at what you wrote. Circle one sentence, one idea, or one feeling that matters. Let that be your starting point. Then take one step towards it.
