Men’s Life Transitions Toolkit - Worksheets, Prompts & Guides

By Donna Burfield - Joy & Purpose Coaching

This worksheet helps you reconnect with the strengths, skills and experience you’ve built over a lifetime.

Many men underestimate just how capable they are, especially after retirement, career changes or major life transitions.

This is a space to slow down, take stock, and remember what you bring to the table.

Section 1 - What I’ve Built & Done

Think through the different roles, jobs, responsibilities and experiences you’ve had over the years.

Jobs and roles I’ve held:

(Include formal roles, side roles, unpaid roles, service roles, leadership, caregiving, volunteering; they all count.)

  •

  •

  •

  •

  •

Projects I’ve handled or contributed to:

(Anything you’ve planned, fixed, supported, led or improved.)

  •

  •

  •

  •

  •

Times I led:

(Official leadership or the moments you naturally stepped up.)

  •

  •

  •

  •

  •

Times I supported others:

(Encouragement, mentoring, teaching, stepping in, helping someone through something hard.)

  •

  •

  •

  •

  •

Section 2 - Skills I’ve Gained Over the Years

Here are examples of skills many men 50+ have built, often without noticing:

  • Problem-solving

  • Calm under pressure

  • Listening

  • Organising

  • Fixing

  • Planning

  • Teaching

  • Encouraging others

  • Managing conflict

  • Technical know-how

  • Patience

  • Practical thinking

  • Teamwork

Which of these feels true to me?

  •

  •

  •

  •

  •

Skills I’ve gained from work, life and experience:

(Add anything that comes to mind. You’ve earned more than you realise.)

  •

  •

  •

  •

  •

Section 3 - Where These Skills Still Matter

Even if career roles shift or slow down, your strengths don’t disappear. They simply need new places to live.

Where do my strengths show up in my family life?

Where do they show up in my community?

(Neighbourhood, volunteering, clubs, groups, informal support, friendships)

If I wanted to share one of my strengths more, what would that look like?

(It could be mentoring, helping someone locally, joining a group, learning something new, or simply being more open with the people around you)
