Updated: Dec 8, 2025

Men’s Life Transitions Toolkit - Worksheets, Prompts & Guides

By Donna Burfield - Joy & Purpose Coaching

These worksheets are designed to help you explore who you are now beyond job titles, old roles, and past versions of yourself.

Move through them at your own pace. There are no right or wrong answers.

Roles Then & Now

1. Roles I Used to Identify with Strongly

List 3-5 roles you used to identify with strongly. For example: provider, manager, team leader, soldier, fixer, or dad of young kids.

  •

  •

  •

  •

  •

2. Roles I Identify with Today

List 3-5 roles that feel most true for you now. For example: grandparent, neighbour, volunteer, mentor, learner, friend.

  •

  •

  •

  •

  •

3. What Do I Miss About My Old Roles?

  • What did those roles give me? (e.g. structure, respect, connection, purpose)

  • What feelings or experiences do I miss the most?

4. What Feels Better About the Roles I Have Now?

  • What feels lighter, calmer, or more authentic about who I am today?

  • Are there pressures I’m relieved to have left behind?

5. Are There Roles I’ve Never Stepped into but Quietly Wanted To?

  • Is there a version of me I’ve always been curious about becoming?

  • Is there something I’ve always wanted to try, explore, or be known for?

Values in This Stage of Life

1. Moments When I Felt “This Is Me”

Think of a few recent moments where you felt like yourself, comfortable, real, and at ease.

  • What was happening?

  • Who were you with (if anyone)?

  • How did you feel?

2. What Mattered Most in Those Moments?

From those situations, what seemed most important? For example: honesty, humour, peace, being useful, being heard, adventure, calm, fairness, and kindness.

List the words or themes that stand out:

  •

  •

  •

  •

  •

3. My 5 Important Values Right Now

Based on what you’ve written so far, choose around 5 values that feel important to you in this chapter of life.

  •

  •

  •

  •

  •

4. Where Do These Values Already Show Up in My Life?

Look at your list of values and consider:

  • Where am I already living in line with these values?

  • In which relationships, habits, or choices do they appear?

5. Where Might I Want More of These Values?

Are there areas where these values seem to be missing or diluted?

  • Where would I like to bring more of them in?

  • What small change might move me closer to that?

The Man I Am Becoming

1. How I Would Describe Myself as a Younger Man

Think back to a younger version of yourself, maybe in your 20s, 30s, or 40s.

How would I describe myself then? (personality, priorities, attitude, strengths)

2. How I Would Describe Myself Now

Now think about who you are today.

How would I describe myself now? Be honest and fair.

3. Qualities That Have Grown Stronger Over Time

With age and experience, some qualities naturally deepen.

What qualities have grown stronger in me? (e.g. patience, perspective, resilience, empathy, humour, calm, determination)

4. The Kind of Man I Want to Be Remembered as in This Chapter of My Life

Not your whole life story, just this chapter.

  • If someone described me during this stage of my life, what would I hope they’d say?

  • What kind of presence do I want to be in the lives of others?

5. One Small Way I Can Live Closer to That Today

Change doesn’t need to be dramatic.

What’s one small, realistic action I could take that moves me closer to the man I want to be in this new chapter?

For example: making a phone call, apologising, saying yes, saying no, resting, offering help, being honest, trying something new.

My one small step:
