Finding Joy, Curiosity & Purpose in Your Next Chapter

Updated: Dec 8, 2025

By Donna Burfield - Joy & Purpose Coaching

Joy, curiosity and purpose aren’t things you “figure out.” They’re things you follow curiously and at your own pace.

Joy Begins When You Let Yourself Want Again

Women spend years putting pleasure and playfulness on the back burner.

Joy was something you squeezed into the cracks. But now? Now joy can have a seat at the table.

It doesn’t need to be dramatic.

It can start with:

  • walking somewhere new

  • buying flowers just because

  • rediscovering music from your teens

  • choosing clothes that make you feel alive, not invisible

  • reading something that opens your mind

  • cooking for pleasure instead of duty

  • laughing with people who light you up

Joy grows when you stop just surviving.

Curiosity Is Your Compass, Not a Luxury

Curiosity is the spark that wakes you up again.

It’s the feeling that says:

  • “I wonder what would happen if…”

  • “I’ve always wanted to try…”

  • “I miss doing…”

  • “What if I learned…”

Curiosity invites movement, not pressure.

  • Try a new class

  • Learn about your ancestry

  • Explore a craft

  • Start a small project

  • Join an online group

  • Travel somewhere you’ve never been

  • Say yes to something that excites you just a little

Curiosity keeps your life expanding instead of shrinking.

Purpose Isn’t a Grand Mission; It’s What Makes You Feel Awake

Purpose after 50 looks different from what it did at 30.

It’s less about productivity and perfection. More about meaning, connection, contribution and being fully yourself.

Purpose can be found in:

  • volunteering

  • mentoring younger women

  • caring for animals

  • writing your stories

  • spending time with grandchildren

  • starting a small business or project

  • returning to education

  • joining a community group

  • supporting a cause you believe in

  • pursuing something you’ve always put off

Purpose isn’t about impressing the world. It’s about enriching your world.

Five Reflective Questions to Explore

  • When do I feel most alive, even in small moments?

  • What have I always been curious about but never had time to explore?

  • If I stopped worrying about age or expectations, what would I love to try?

  • What brings me joy that I’ve pushed aside for years?

  • What kind of purpose feels meaningful for who I am now, not who I used to be?

Let these questions sit with you. The answers will come when they’re ready.

Moving Forward

Choose one small spark this week, something joyful, something curious, or something that gives your life a sense of direction.

Not a big leap. Not a perfectly planned reinvention.

Just one tiny shift that says:

“This chapter belongs to me now.”

Your future doesn’t need to be forced. It only needs to be explored.
